YOUTH & ELDERS WORKING ON DICTIONARY PROJECT

Vision Statement

The goals of Language Preservation is to develop and sustain a culturally competent plan to improve our Apache Language and well-being for our children across San Carlos Apache reservation.  Language Preservation’s vision is to establish the Apache language that will serve as a resource for tribal members.

San Carlos Apache Language Preservation Program is funded through Administration for Native American (ANA), First Things First (Arizona Early Childhood Development & Health Board), Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) & San Carlos Apache Tribe.  The Program is providing Native American & Culture acquisition for community at large.

The program has developed an Apache seasonal curriculum, digital repository of the Apache Language, interviewed and interacted with elders to gain traditional knowledge on the cultural significant activities.  The program implemented a community-based Apache language master and apprentice program that utilized immersion and total response best practice to strengthen language fluency.  Currently, the program is developing a san Carlos Apache Wester dictionary that will be provided to our Apache people.
