WMAT Council reaffirms its opposition to the destruction of Oak Flat

2021-04-08T09:31:00+00:00

San Carlos and White Mountain Apache Tribal Council members. On Wednesday April 7, 2021 at its regular Council meeting, the White Mountain Apache Tribal Council reaffirmed its opposition to the destruction of Oak Flat by supporting the repeal of the Southeastern Arizona Land Exchange Act (the area encompassing Oak Flat), supporting the Save Oak Flat Act recently introduced in Congress, and requesting the USDA to withdraw publication of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which it published and recently withdrew from publication.  Tribes and organizations across the United States demanded the withdrawal of publication from President Biden and President Biden responded. Chairman [...]

Feds withdraw environmental impact statement, delaying Oak Flat land swap

2021-04-06T14:50:32+00:00

The U.S. Forest Service has withdrawn the final environmental impact statement for a huge copper mine near Superior, temporarily halting a land swap that would have given the mine's owners title to a parcel deemed sacred by many Apaches and other Southwestern tribes. In a statement released Monday, Tonto National Forest said the federal government had received significant input from many parties after the release of the final environmental impact statement on Jan. 15. As a result, the U.S. Department of Agriculture directed the forest service to rescind the decision it made based on the review document. Tonto officials said a [...]

Letter to Governor Ducey, March 2021

2021-03-29T09:41:00+00:00

Via E-mail and U.S. Postal Service on March 29, 2021 The Honorable Doug Ducey GovernorState of Arizona1700 W. Washington St. Phoenix, AZ 85007 [email protected] Dear Governor Ducey: I am extremely disappointed in the inaccurate statements and flagrant omissions of fact in your March 16, 2021 letter to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack concerning the proposed massive mine of foreign-owned conglomerates Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton though their limited liability company, Resolution Copper. Virtually all Arizona Indian tribes oppose this dangerous mine because it will destroy public land of significant historical, religious, cultural, and archeological value, including Chi’chil Biłdagoteel, also known as Oak [...]

Council allocates $2,000 Emergency Economic Assistance Payments, March 2021

2021-03-26T09:29:00+00:00

The total active cases for the Tribe have gone down to zero.  On Monday March 15, 2021, at its special Council meeting, the Council approved TERC’s request to discontinue using the Apache Gold Casino Hotel as an alternate care site due to the stabilization of new infections and the spread of the virus.  This will be effective March 31, 2021.  The Healthcare Corporation advises that everyone needs to continue wearing their masks and practicing cleanliness.  The Tribe hopes to reach herd immunity by April of next month. At the same meeting, the San Carlos Council earmarked and obligated $24,070,000 from the [...]

Proposed Resolution Mine would Forever Desecrate Sacred Lands

2021-01-22T14:28:00+00:00

An op-ed by Chairman Terry Rambler. The Jan. 21 guest opinion written by Resolution Copper Company’s project director Andrew Lye grossly misleads the public when he states that “Native American tribes are very much at the table shaping this project.” As Chairman of the San Carlos Apache Tribe, I unequivocally state we, along with the National Congress of Indians and the Inter-Tribal Association of Arizona (ITAA), remain vehemently opposed to the construction of the Resolution Mine 70 miles east of Phoenix. This project will desecrate Chich’il Bildagoteel, also known as Oak Flat, which is the heart of our religious and cultural [...]
